Following a fierce battle with Alzheimer’s Disease,
George Veroutis left us peacefully on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.
He was surrounded by his devoted wife and their three children.
Together they cared for George with selflessness and love. George was 88 years old.
As Henry David Thoreau wrote, "When it's time to die, let us not discover that we have never lived.”
Nothing could be more true for George as he lived and achieved more than he could have ever imagined
when he left his small village, Anavriti in 1954 for Montreal.
In Montreal, George became a successful restaurateur,
running Famous Delicatessen on Mont Royal for 40 years with his beloved brothers, Peter and Louis.
He married Athanasia Milakos in 1963 and raised three beautiful children, Helen, Kondilo and Christina.
George was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin,
father-in-law and friend- just a few of the many roles he was so proud to have.
George’s cultivated gentleness, honesty,
and kindness touched everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.
Those who were close to him, and even those who had only met him a handful of times,
described George as having the kindest eyes and most gentle demeanor.
Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren,
and considered his role as a grandparent his greatest accomplishment.
He taught his six grandchildren, George, Garifalia, Stasia, Kristina,
Stephanie and Sophia compassion, generosity and how to live an honorable life.
He loved watching them grow into their own and become people he was so proud of.
He was a man of few faults and even his homemade wine eventually became drinkable and won a medal.
Despite his many successes and accomplishments in life,
he always remained humble, choosing to live a simple life and never wanting for anything.
We were blessed to have learned so many valuable lessons from him.
It was an honor to be in his life and he will be greatly missed. His family will always remember him and his legacy.
