OBITUARY OF CHIU, Wing Ying
Born on October 7, 1931 in Toisan Village, People’s Republic of China. After having survived two major strokes, the first wave of covid-19, he passed away at Centre d’hébergement Jean- De La Lande on February 12, 2022.
In 1971, Wing Ying immigrated with his wife, Lai Hung, and four young children from Hong Kong to settle and be reunited in Trois-Rivières with his sister Mee Sham Ng and her family. Immediately, Wing Ying began to work long hours as a cook in various Chinese restaurants which served ‘mets chinois’ until his forced retirement from health problems decades later.
His work required him to pull off nearly 12-hour night shifts, 6 days per week, and almost no vacation time. His main way of relieving stress was playing mah-jong with the other restaurant workers and treating his family to pizza or KFC on Tuesdays, his only day off.
After his second stroke, Wing Ying lived the rest of his life with disabilities, suffered the loss of his youngest daughter Sui Mei (Linda) to cancer in 2011, and for the past ten years, lived in a long-term care institution where he was always appreciative of the excellent care of the staff and greatly enjoyed visits from his family, especially his grandchildren.
The family he left to mourn include his wife LO, Lai Hung, his three children May Chiu, Ann Chiu (spouse Kaan Firatli), and Andy Chiu, his grandchildren Norman Kong, Tian Chiu, Rye Chiu-Smith, Tao Chiu-Smith, Amanda Chiu (husband Frank Lamarre), Sean Chiu (spouse Deirdre Sellors), great grandchildren Damien Ah Cheung Lamarre and Caleb Barry Chiu, his sister Mei Sham Ng and her children Joanne Eng, John Eng and Susan Eng and extended family, his other sister Mei Tong Zhao and her extended family, and his brother Rong En Zhao and his extended family, as well as all of the extended family of his 2 older siblings who died before him.
His immediate family will honour him with a memorial service on Saturday February 19, 2022, from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Aeterna Funeral Complex located at 55 Gince, in Montreal, tel.514-228-1888 (https://complexeaeterna.com/) The burial will take place in late spring.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of L’hébergement Jean-De La Lande. We would kindly ask that if you are interested, instead of sending flowers, to please instead donate to the Immigrant Workers’ Centre: https://iwc-cti.ca/donate-to-the-iwc-cti/ or to the Chinese Family Services of Greater Montreal.
