It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nira SHAH at the age of 76.

C’est avec grande tristesse et le cœur lourd que nous vous annonçons le décès de Nira SHAH, à l’âge de 76 ans.

Nira Shah, aged 76, passed away on October 13, 2024, in Toronto, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of late Ramji and late Monghi Mepa Harania and the wife of late Prafulchandra Somchand Shah. She is survived by her loving sons Sanjeev (Oorbee) and Kamal (Neigie) and grandchildren Neelan, Avnee, Nevan, and Rohan.
She was the sister-in-law of late Amritlal & (Kalavati) Shah, Kantilal (Tony) & Bharti Shah, late Shashikant & Sarla Shah, Anju & late Anil Shah, Aruna & Jayantilal Patel, Rehka & Vipool Gudka, Kirit (Baba) & Mayuri Shah, Bina & Krish Maharaj. She was the beloved sister and sister-in-law of Amratben & Nathoo bhai, Rambhiben & late Jivrajbhai, Kanchanben & late Shantibhai, late Savitaben, Sudhaben & Ramniklal, Shantabhen & late Shantibhai, Sanjay & Rajeshree Shah, Rajen & late Veena Shah.
Nira left her home in Nairobi at the young age of 17 to study Optics in London and a few years later met Praful, whom she married in 1970. A young couple, she was only 22 when they moved to Canada to start a life together. She immediately went to work as an optical assistant, supporting Praful as he pursued his higher education. Later, she would become a fixture at Shah Trading Company, the family business. She worked there both in the early years and the later years, where her kind and gentle soul brought an unmatched personable charm to the workplace.
Quiet but steadfast, Nira was truly the backbone of the family. Throughout the years, as more family came over to Canada, her door was always open and her rotlis were always hot. Forever busy, Nira was an active member of the community and had many passions, including yoga, reading, bridge, travel and cooking. She was always ready to play a game of bridge or show you her shoulder stands. Nira was a beautiful woman, with sharp blue-green eyes, who defied age by looking younger with each passing year. Her warm infectious giggle will be remembered fondly.
She had a wide array of friends who loved her and will miss her terribly, including her caregiver and dear friend, Yolanda. Nira was also loved by her many (grand)nieces and (grand)nephews who saw her as a second mom and grandmother. Above all, Nira was a devoted mother. She nurtured her two boys with a gentle touch, always supporting their endeavors and antics and encouraging them to join the family business.
We are shocked and deeply saddened by her sudden passing but find comfort in knowing the last night of her life was spent celebrating the family’s 50 years in business, an amazing legacy she helped establish. She was surrounded by many people who loved her dearly and were proud of what she had accomplished.
Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto for their kindness, support, and care during this difficult time.
Om shanti, Om shanti, Om shanti.
The family is overcome with appreciation and gratitude for the amount of support received by friends and family and suggests any memorial contributions, if desired, be made to Hindu Mandir DDO ([email protected]) in her honour.
