À la douce mémoire de Peter G.C. Campbell
C'est avec le cœur lourd que nous annonçons le décès de Peter Campbell, qui nous a quittés le 30 janvier, peu de temps après avoir été diagnostiqué avec la SLA et avoir connu un déclin rapide. Peter laisse dans le deuil son épouse Barbara Campbell née Kelly, ses enfants Kimberley, Andrew (Kyoko), Owen (Stephanie), ses frères Douglas et Robert et sa sœur Elsbeth, ses petits-enfants Amelia, Kian et Veronika ainsi que plusieurs neveux, nièces et sa famille élargie.
Né le 4 mai 1943, Peter n'était pas seulement un mari, père, grand-père et oncle dévoué; il était également une figure de proue dans son domaine scientifique.
Pionnier de renommée internationale en biogéochimie et écotoxicologie des métaux dans les milieux aquatiques, Peter a laissé une empreinte durable grâce à ses recherches et à son mentorat. Il a guidé de nombreux doctorants et étudiants en maîtrise, a été un auteur prolifique, a agi comme consultant et a collaboré avec une multitude de scientifiques partageant des intérêts similaires à travers le monde. Son expertise a été grandement sollicitée par les agences gouvernementales, les entreprises minières internationales et les communautés autochtones du Québec. En tant que professeur à l'Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (Université du Québec), INRS ETE, ses contributions à la science ont été reconnues lorsqu'il fut élu à l’Académie des sciences de la Société royale du Canada en 2002 et a reçu le Founders Award de la Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry en 2019, la plus haute distinction décernée à une personne pour souligner sa contribution exceptionnelle en sciences environnementales.
Au-delà de ses impressionnantes réalisations professionnelles, Peter était un sportif passionné (tennis, golf, basketball et grand marcheur entre autres) avec un brin de compétitivité! Il a inculqué ses valeurs à ses enfants et petits-enfants, les encourageant à voyager et à s'intéresser au monde qui les entoure. Connu pour sa gentillesse, son intégrité et sa compassion, Peter avait un esprit brillant et une âme bienveillante qui ont touché de nombreuses vies. Il avait aussi un sens de l'humour désarmant, klaxonnant souvent de manière ludique les autres conducteurs du même modèle de voiture. Peu de gens savent que Peter était un “grammairien” en quelque sorte (tout comme sa mère), toujours attentif aux nuances de la langue et de la communication. Sa discipline et son organisation étaient apparentes dans tout ce qu'il faisait, et son héritage sera chéri par tous ceux qui ont eu le privilège de le connaître.
Sa vie avait de l'importance, elle inspirait et élevait ceux qui l'entouraient. Il manquera énormément à tous ceux qui l'ont connu, mais son souvenir restera gravé dans leurs mémoires.

Peter a joué un rôle prépondérant dans ma carrière. Il a été un mentor exceptionnel et je lui serai toujours reconnaissant pour tout ce qu'il a fait pour moi. Il était généreux, patient, attentif, empathique, rigoureux, dévoué et doté d'un bon sens de l'humour, entre autres qualités. Toutes mes condoléances à Barbara, Kimberley, Owen, Andrew et tous les autres membres de la famille. Il me manque déjà, mais il continuera de vivre dans mes pensées.

Peter est quelqu’un qui a marqué mon enfance, qui m’a vu grandir, qui m’a hébergé maintes fois à son chalet, qui est le père de mon grand ami Owen et que je n’oublierai pas. Je retiens son humour pince sans rire, son amour du basket (qui m’a été transmise par son fils Owen et qui a été transmise à mon propre fils aujourd’hui), sa grande gentillesse, sa sagesse et son humanité. In Loving Memory of Peter G.C. Campbell
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Peter Campbell, who left us on January 30th, shortly after being diagnosed with ALS and experiencing a rapid decline. Peter is survived by his wife Barbara Campbell née Kelly, his children Kimberley, Andrew (Kyoko), Owen (Stephanie), his brothers Douglas and Robert and sister Elsbeth, his grand children Amelia, Kian and Veronika along with several nephews, nieces and extended family.
Born on May 4th, 1943, Peter was not just a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle; he was a trailblazer in his scientific field.
An internationally renowned pioneer in biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology of metals in aquatic environments, Peter made a lasting impact through his research and mentorship. He guided many PhD and MSc students, was a prolific author, served as a consultant, and collaborated with a wide range of scientists sharing similar interests around the globe. His expertise was highly sought after by government agencies, international mining companies, and Indigenous communities in Quebec. As a professor at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (Université du Québec), INRS ETE, his contributions to science were recognized when he was nominated to the Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002 and received the Founders Award from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in 2019, the highest distinction awarded to an individual for their outstanding contribution to environmental sciences.
Beyond his impressive professional accomplishments, Peter was an avid athlete (tennis, golf, basketball, and an enthusiastic walker among others) always with a touch of competitive spirit! He instilled his values in his children and grandchildren, encouraging them to travel and to be curious about the world around them. Known for his kindness, integrity, and compassion, Peter had a brilliant mind and a kind soul that touched many lives. He also possessed a disarming sense of humour, often playfully honking at fellow drivers of the same car model. A little-known fact about Peter is that he was a “grammarian” of sorts (just like his mother), always attentive to the nuances of language and communication. His discipline and organization were apparent in all that he did, and his legacy will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
His life mattered, inspired and elevated those around him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Dear Campbell Family, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. Peter was an extraordinary man, not only in his remarkable contributions to science but in the way he touched the lives of those around him. His kindness, intellect, and unwavering curiosity left an impact that will be felt for generations. Yet, even beyond his renowned scientific achievements, the love he shared—the devoted husband he was and the extraordinarily generous and kind children he raised—showed us all just what an amazing man he was. I remember him so well growing up—he was a towering presence, a beacon of respect, integrity, and achievement. To my family, he represented kindness and generosity, and when we were new to Canada, he was one of the first to make us feel truly welcome in a place where we weren’t sure we belonged. His warmth and generosity will never be forgotten. My own life—and my family’s—would be very different today if it weren’t for his presence—his scientific papers neatly organized in piles, learning about basketball from his Sports Illustrated, or losing tennis matches to him at the cottage. And he made all that difference without a thought—without even trying. He was a hero to me and always will be. I still regret buying that Yankees hat. I won’t be making that mistake again. Wishing you strength and comfort during this difficult time and sending you all my love. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched—including mine and my family’s.
