It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Ajoy Nag on January 21, 2026, at the age of 77. He is survived by his beloved wife Surpriya 'Shilpi' Shome, his son Arijit 'Amit' Nag, his daughter Anushua 'Brishti' Nag, his son-in-law Steven Rendulic, his brothers Biman Bihari 'Bishu' Nag (Protima) and Pradip 'Haru' Nag (Kaberi), his sister Modumita 'Mita' Shome (Ashish), his loving nephews and nieces and countless loved ones across countries and continents who called him Dada (brother), Dadu (granddad), Mama/Pishu/Kaku (uncle) and Guru.
He spent his life dreaming of a better and freer Bangladesh. He devoted half his life to making those dreams true, and the other half to making his children's Canadian dreams true. He allowed them to build lives in a world in which he was an alien. He was as proud of the rich lives they built as he was of the achievements of his nephews and nieces and of the many members of the Bangladeshi community he warmly welcomed into his heart and family.
He connected with all those around him through the universal languages of food, politics and sports.
He loved to eat well. He loved even more to watch others eat well. He saw every meal as an opportunity to share with others his love and his wife's legendary culinary skills. Even in his last days, he carefully planned his son's breakfasts and surreptiously gave treats to his daughter's dog Olive.
His knowledge of world history and geography was unmatched. He engaged in lively debates on Bangladeshi and world politics with anyone daring enough to go head to head against him. He always spoke purposefully, thoughtfully and fearlessly.
His love for sports was evident for everyone to see - whether it's staying up all night to watch cricket or waking up very early to watch football, he did it without hesitation. He spent a lot of his free time watching sports and talking about sports with anyone he could find. As a Sunamgonji through and through, he combined his love for food and sports by going fishing with friends whenever he could.
He lived simply, dreamed selflessly and loved generously. We will miss you, Baba.
