C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de
Me Régent Patry, avocat – jurilinguiste, le 10 avril 2022 à l’âge de 90 ans.
Il était le fils de feu Raoul Patry, feu Rose-Alba Courchesne et le frère de feu Lise (Jean-
Marc) et feu Régine.
Récemment veuf de Thérèse Lavigne avec qui il a partagé 63 années de bonheur, il
laisse dans le deuil, son fils Pierre ainsi que son beau-fils Jacques Despins (Lynda), ses
petits-enfants Charles (Sophie) et Amélie (Benjamin). Il laisse également dans le deuil
sa belle-soeur Lise (Sylvain), son beau-frère Jean-Marc (feu Lise), sa cousine Marie-
Claire (Joseph) ainsi que ses nièces et neveux et membres de sa famille qui lui était si
précieux.
Régent était surtout connu pour avoir été, durant 13 ans, coordonnateur national du
PAJLO (Programme de l’administration de la justice dans les deux langues officielles).
De concert avec le Secrétariat d’État, les gouvernements provinciaux et les organismes
associés au Programme, ses fonctions consistaient à coordonner et rentabiliser les
efforts et les ressources, à veiller à ce que l’ensemble des activités réalisées soient
conformes aux objectifs et ainsi assurer la bonne marche des comités. Le milieu
juridique connaît Régent Patry d’un océan à l’autre comme étant Monsieur PAJLO.
Natif de Bouchette en Outaouais, il s’inscrit en droit civil à l’Université d’Ottawa et
décroche sa licence en droit en 1956 et est admis au Barreau du Québec l’année
suivante. En 1958, il ouvre un premier cabinet à Maniwaki et très amoureux de Thérèse
Lavigne, ils se marient. Régent se lance en politique et il est le plus jeune candidat dans
une campagne électorale au Canada. On le verra aux côtés de Jean Lesage ainsi que
John Diefenbaker. Les ambitions politiques refroidies, il s’en retourne à l’exercice du
droit. Tout en exerçant, il retourne sur les bancs d’école et s’inscrit à la maîtrise en droit
public à l’Université d’Ottawa. Il en sortira avec un diplôme et la satisfaction de voir le
Conseil de la langue française publier son mémoire sous le titre « La législation
linguistique fédérale »
C’est à partir de là, après une quinzaine d’années en cabinet privé et au Port de
Montréal, puis au ministère de la Justice à Ottawa sous la direction de la ministre de la
justice Kim Campbell avant qu’elle ne devienne première ministre du Canada, qu’il s’est
tourné vers la défense et la promotion de sa langue. À divers titres : comme traducteur
au Secrétariat d’état affecté à la cour suprême; comme arrêtiste et enfin comme
coordonnateur du PAJLO.
Il repose maintenant en paix auprès de son grand Amour.
Des funérailles privées auront lieu à une date ultérieure.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Me Régent Patry, lawer –
jurilinguist, on April 10, 2022 at the age of 90.
He was the son of the late Raoul Patry, the late Rose-Alba Courchesne and the brother
of the late Lise (Jean-Marc) and the late Régine.
Recently widowed from Thérèse Lavigne with whom he shared 63 years of happiness,
he leaves behind his son Pierre and his son-in-law Jacques Despins (Lynda), his
grandchildren Charles (Sophie) and Amélie (Benjamin). He also leaves behind his
sister-in-law Lise (Sylvain), his brother-in-law Jean-Marc (late Lise), his cousin Marie-
Claire (Joseph) as well as his nieces and nephews and family members who were so
precious to him.
Regent was best known for his 13 years as the National Coordinator of POLAJ
(Administration of Justice in Both Official Languages Program).
Working with the Department of the Secretary of State, the provincial governments and
the organizations associated with the Program, his duties consisted of coordinating and
making the most of efforts and resources, ensuring that all the activities carried out were
in line with the objectives and thus ensuring the smooth running of the committees.
Régent Patry is known to the legal community from coast to coast as Mr. POLAJ.
Born in Bouchette in the Outaouais region, he enrolled in civil law at the University of
Ottawa and obtained his law degree in 1956 and was admitted to the Quebec Bar the
following year. In 1958, he opened his first law office in Maniwaki and, very much in love
with Thérèse Lavigne, they married. Régent entered politics and was the youngest
candidate in an electoral campaign in Canada. He will be seen alongside Jean Lesage
and John Diefenbaker. His political ambitions cooled, he returned to the practice of law.
While practicing law, he went back to school and enrolled in a Master’s degree in public
law at the University of Ottawa. He graduated with a degree and the satisfaction of
seeing the Conseil de la langue française publish his thesis under the title “La législation
linguistique fédérale”.
It was from there, after some fifteen years in private practice and at the Port of Montreal,
followed with The Justice Department in Ottawa under minister of justice Kim Campbell
before she became prime minister of Canada, he then turned to the defence and
promotion of his language. He has worked in various capacities: as a translator for the
Secretary of State assigned to the Supreme Court; as an editor and finally as
coordinator of POLAJ.
He now rests in peace with his great Love.
A private funeral will be held at a later date.
